Why this Seminar?

The aim of the Seminar is to facilitate the timely and coherent development of the Arabic Web presence, by identifying and promoting the resolution of outstanding standardization issues.

While web standards are still evolving, yet some have already provided for Internationalization, of which Arabic is one of. Therefore, the design of a multilingual site should respect existing standards interpreted within an internationalization framework. To insure interoperability, a web developer needs to learn about these standards and the problems they involve.

The Seminar focuses on Arabic Web standards. The objective is to offer an open Workshop for the key market players in the Arabic web in order to:


Seminar Program

The seminar will be divided into 2 sessions:

Session I : Internationalization of the Internet

This presentation will focus on the internationalization of the Internet , with particular emphasis on issues related to use of the Arabic language on the World Wide Web . Pertinent standards will be presented and discussed, as well as practical considerations about HTML and Arabic. The presentation will include a live demonstration of commercially available tools.

Session II : Workshop

The workshop intends to discuss issues and experience in standards development, in order to promote progressive action throughout the industry.

Francois Yergeau is one of the pioneers of Internet internationalization. While working in the academic world, he maintained and published an FAQ on using accented on Usenet. Having moved to the private sector, in the field of multilingual Internet software , he has been active since 1994 in ISO and Internet standardization , especially internationalization of the Web , while being instrumental in the design and creation of the very first truly multilingual Web browser , Tango . He is the principal author of the current Internet standard on HTML internationalization, RFC 2070 .

Who should attend?

With its clear focus on Arabic web efficiency, the Seminar is essential for Web developers, Internet information service providers, content providers, standards related bodies, regulators, EIS policy makers, web development course instructors ...etc.

The audience should be semi-technical ; they don't need to be experts in Computer Science or programming, but they should be ready to digest a fair amount of technical issues. The aim is to achieve a carefully-balanced audience, ensuring that all major players effecting the Arabic Web presence are represented, like major IT organizations, public authorities, standardization parties, service providers and academics.
